407 (Demon) Squadron

407 Squadron aircrew preparing for a sortie

407 Squadron, which served at Bircham Newton and Docking during most of 1942 and again in early 1943, earned its 'Demon' nickname from its fearless low-level attacks on enemy shipping in the North Sea, achieving the highest numbers of ships sunk or seriously damaged in a single month.

The photograph shows a 407 Squadron Hudson crew preparing for a sortie.
